A noteworthy Oriya poet and writer Gangadhar Meher was born in the year 1867, at Puri in what is now Odisha. The works of Gangadhar Meher have been written in the dialects of Odia. He popularized a form of song used in Bengal called Rabindra Sangeet or songs about Rabindranath Tagore. He was a poet and a journalist. His works and songs were popular and inspired nationalistic feelings in the people of Odisha. He had written poems on the glory of Satyagrah, Non-cooperation movement, nationalism etc. Gangadhar Meher's "Chandrakantha" is a literary work that recreates the human soul as a cloud of music surrounded by ten virtues. In his poetry there is evidence that Gangadhar Meher was influenced by the search for his identity as an Oriya writer within the backdrop of growing nationalism in India. In "Chandrakantha", Gangadhar Meher has captured nature, music, love and human emotions in poetic form. He used the "Muktaka" as a basic structure and adopted "chhandas" and "chhappa" as his basic metre. The language of the poem is simple and sweet. Gangadhar Meher was a versatile poet who wrote on various topics such as nature, human life, rural life, village life, arts, culture and literature. He translated Mahendra Bhagavat's Chandrakantha into Oriya in 1935. Other important works like "Satyagraha Sahityara Sankshema", "Seeta Sangita", "Neethi Sangit", Language Movement (Oriya) etc. are his other well-known literary works. Gangadhar Meher was born to Akshaya Kumar Meher and Bhukya Devi at Puri on 3 January 1867. He had his initial education in primary school at Puri. After finishing primary school he opted Sanskrit as an additional subject along with English. He passed the entrance examination from Sambalpur, Odisha in 1887 with scholarship and also topped the list of successful candidates. Gangadhar Meher joined Fergusson College, Pune for his undergraduate studies in Arts (Bachelor of Arts). However he left college after just six months due to financial problems and returned to Puri. He passed his B.A. examination from Patna University in 1893. Thereafter he joined the editorial staff of Odia Daily "Sambad" at Bhubaneshwar, Odisha as sub-editor, however after few months left the job due to his disagreement with the management on some issues related to politics and ideology. He had strong feelings about politics and society during this period which are reflected in his literary works.
